Host to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Gold Coast is one of Australia’s premier holiday destinations. The Gold Coast is located in south-east Queensland, just one hour south of Brisbane, and stretches from Oxenford in the north to Coolangatta in the south, South Stradbroke Island in the east and incorporates Surfers Paradise on the coast.
The number of international visitors travelling to the Gold Coast increased 9.0% in the year ending March 2017 to a record high of just over 1.0 million. The Gold Coast was the most popular destination in Queensland among Chinese travelers and China is the Gold Coast’s largest source market. Holiday visitors dominated international travel with a 79.2% share and growth over the year of 9%, reaching a record high of 819,000.
Gold Coast Tourism (GCT), the regional tourism organisation, reported the following highlights and initiatives for 2015-16:
- GCT participated in or led collaborative Experience Development / Industry Development initiatives including but not limited to: Evolution of the Be My Guest Program and launch of the Be My Guest Service Awards, Engaging the China Market Program and Gold Coast Tourism's Digital Coaching Initiative for Industry.
- Enhanced direct aviation access was achieved to greater China and other key source markets such as New Zealand and South East Asia.
- ATE2016, held on the Gold Coast, was the best attended (buyers and sellers) in nearly a decade, reflective of the upbeat tourism economy and attractiveness of the new, refreshed host destination.
