The Sunshine Coast features coastal beaches and waterways, scenic hinterland areas, national parks as well as world-class resorts, quality restaurants and several attractions.
The Sunshine Coast incorporates the beach side towns of Caloundra, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Coolum, Noosa, Cooloola Coast and also includes the hinterland, Glass House Mountains, Kenilworth, the Mary Valley and the Blackall Range.
Domestic visitation to the Sunshine Coast increased 6.0% in the year ending March 2017 reaching a new record high of 3.4 million visitors. International visitors grew 7.2%. International overnight expenditure grew by 1.7% to $240.0 million, domestic overnight expenditure was stable at just over $2 billion.
Visit Sunshine Coast is the regional tourism organisation, reported the following highlights and initiatives for 2015-16.
- 2015-16 was a stellar year with continuous growth in demand for flights to the region, with record passenger numbers reaching 964 362, a 13.2% increase on the previous year. Capacity grew by 13.5% thanks to the introduction of Qantas services to Sydney and increased seats on Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland by Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.
- The region has become as one of the fastest growing port destinations in Australia. In 2015-2016 the cruise industry was estimated to have generated $1.2million in total expenditure for the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast will host the 2017 Australian Cruise Association Conference and AGM.
- 90 events were held, delivering in excess of $100 million in economic benefit, supported by the region's first dedicated events campaign, ‘The World is Coming’ launched in January 2016. Events included the Social Media in Tourism Symposium 2015 #SoMeTAU15, Queensland Information Centres Association Conference 2015, and the Australian Smart Communities Summit 2016, The Events Centre Caloundra. The Australian Event Awards will be held on the Sunshine Coast from 2016-2018.
